Bronx, New York: The 33rd Cardinal Hayes Annual Hall of Fame Dinner Dance brings together Hayesmen from all generations to celebrate a common bond. There is much preparation to create such a big event, including a full video production to capture the evening’s celebration. Housed inside the Martin Scorsese Media Lab, the student run Channel H News has provided quality images that rival any news outlet. Each week, a crew of eight Hayesmen led by instructor Rasiel Guevara carefully outline every detail of their production schedule. For the Hayesmen who write, edit and produce all the content, the Hall of Fame Dinner holds a special place in their hearts. In essence, they are getting a glimpse into their own future as potential Hall of Famers and Inductees.
Timothy Poindexter, an editor for the news channel is honored to be a participant. “It is essential that I participate. I want to be just as successful as these honorees. I am at a point in my life where I am starting to define goals for myself and being around these Hayesmen inspires me to do well.”
All of the inductees and honorees have contributed to the progress of the Hayes legacy through various initiatives. One honoree who has a personal connection with members of the production crew is English teacher, Mr. Rui Guimaraes. On Saturday, March 19th at the Marina Del Rey, Guimaraes will receive the Distinguished Faculty Award. Eduardo Solis, a senior, considers Guimaraes a great mentor. “He is one of the most influential teachers at Hayes. He is known to take time out of his day to help students both professionally and personally.” Brandon Franklin, shares the same sentiment. “Mr. Guimaraes is genuine. You can discuss English and any other topic with him. He teaches his students to become critical thinkers and helps them enhance their analytical skills. He is incredibly versatile.” As the crew sat around the news desk at the Martin Scorsese Media Lab, they could not help but feel that they are part of something very special. Gregory Urena who will be one of the student presenters at the award ceremony felt elated. “I am proud to be part of a group of this caliber. I can only hope that I can be like them one day.”
