A Hayesman‘s Arc
Bronx, New York: Greek philosopher and playwright Sophocles once said, “There is no success without hardship.” For seventeen-year-old Darius Austin these words hold great meaning. Life has dealt Austin a series of unfortunate circumstances. The death of his grandfather and father in the span of a few short years and in 2015 a fire ravaged his home. Despite these setbacks, Austin found a way to move forward through positive reinforcement. During this period of uncertainty, he discovered his true calling. At eleven -years-old, Austin appeared in the 2007 summer blockbuster movie Spiderman 3 as a member of a boy scout troop. From that moment on, he was bitten by the proverbial acting bug.
However, it would take several years before he really pursued his dream. Cardinal Hayes and his fellow classmates were instrumental in helping the once introverted young man take a step into the spotlight. “Growing up I didn’t apply myself. Coming to Hayes, I was shy, but the environment here changed me for the better. Pablo Quesado, a member of the Cardinal Players encouraged me to audition for Damn Yankees and take a chance. I figured that if they could do it, so can I.”
Veteran art teacher and mentor Daniel Torres played a special role in helping Austin blossom into a confident young man. “Mr. Torres was there when everything else failed. When I needed advice and guidance he was legitimately there.”
Torres was always impressed by Austin’s resilience and upbeat demeanor. “During that traumatic, life-changing chapter in his young life, he was able to navigate through some difficult times that honestly, I even wondered how he was holding up. I credit his passion for acting, especially playing a major role in our annual musical and of course the Hayes community for keeping his spirits alive.”
Currently, Austin is working on a script that focuses on social issues affecting urban areas. “My dream is to be in movies that have a positive message that can help uplift the community.” In the fall, Austin will attend SUNY Purchase where he will study acting and computer programming.
